Wordsworth & Coleridge

Hello readers...
This task given by Dr. Dilip barad sir.. Hed of the dipartment of English maharaja krishna kumarsiahji bhavnagar university.
The above question is in reference to a comparative critical study between Wordsworth's "preface to Lyrical Ballads" and Coleridge's "biographia literature".

# write brief note on the views of Wordsworth and Coleridge on poem.
William wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge differ in opinion on the correct understanding of poems and poetry as expressed in their respective writings preface to Lyrical Ballads and biographia literera. For making this point clear we have to understand both the writers and their works in deep that what they said and what is their point of view. Where they makes diffence in their thinking and how they define poetry or diffentiate poetry.
Wordsworth's writings are highly sequential, logical and remain in a single thought form all throughout his creative end he is unable to maintain a single thought probably due to his opinion which he is notorious for.
Wordsworth admonishes simplicity of diction and style which is also evident of his famous preface but coleridge is known for his convoluted, esoteric and philosophical language in his biographia literaria.
Braking with the earlien eighteenth century, which maintained that poetry should be rational and objective, Wordsworth's "preface to the Lyrical Ballads" focused on the subjectivity of the individual. He writes, 'Humble and rustic life was generally chosen, passions of the heart... Speak a planner and more emphatic language, notice that in the preface to "lirical Ballads" there is not much about imagination.
Semuel Taylor Coleridge brought back the issue of imagination and fancy in his discussion of poetry in "biographia literaria" while to wordsworth, imagination was something taken for granted, especially in poets, Coleridge, while agreeing with wordsworth 's premise, nevertheless, clarifies for himself what imagination was what was the difference between century critics tended to merge to gather.
Imagery "affecting incidents:just thought ; interesting personal or dimestic feelings, and with these the art of their combination or inter texture in the form of a poem and prose".
Here, we see coleridge sometimes seems inconsistent in the development of essential terms and cncepts;but his repeated avowal of "the necessity of bottoming on fixed principles" lends rigor and relevance to all of his prose writings far beyond their immediate context.
#The Rime of the Ancient mariner.

The Rime of the Ancient mariner is the longest major poem by the English poet samuel Taylor Coleridge, written in 1797-98 and published in 7798 in the first editions use a revised version printed in 1817 that featured a gloss.
The Rime of the Ancient mariner relates the experiences of a sailor who has returned from a long sea voyage. The mariner stops a man who is on his way to a wedding ceremony and begins to narrate a story. The wedding guests reaction turns from bemusement to impatience to fear to fascination as the mariner's story.
                  With my cross - bow
                  I shot the albatross.
The crew is angry with the mariner, believing the albatross brought the south wind that led them out of the Antarctic. However, the sailors change their minds when weather becomes warmer and the mist disappears ;
                   "Twas right, said they, such
                     Birds to slay,
That bring the fog and mist.
They soon find that they made a grave mistake in supporting this crime;as it arouses the earth of spirits who then snow, the land of ice now sends the ship into uncharted waters near the equator, where it is becalmed.
As they discussed she vocke's book, Wordsworth proffers the following developmently contains a reference to tutelary contains a reference to him as having killed one of there brids on entering the south sea, and the tutelarly spirits of these regions tack upon them to avenge the crime by the time the trio finished their walk, the poem had taken shape.
  #The prelude

The prelude or, growth of a poets mind;an autobiographical poem in blank verse by the English poet william wordsworth.
The poem was intended as the prologue to a long three - part epic and philosophical poem, The Recluse though wordsworth planned this project when he was in his late 20,s he went to his grave at 80 year old having written to some completion only The Prelude and the second part, and leaving no more than fragments of the rest.
Coleridge's inspiration and interest is evident in his letters, for instance, in 1799 he wrote to wordsworth :"I am anxiously eager to have you steadily employed on 'The Recluse".... I wish you would write a poem, in blank verse, addressed to those who, in consequences of the complete failure of the French revolution, હવે, thrown up all hopes of amelioration of mankind, and are sinking into an almost Epicurean selfishness.
                                           Thank you....

Culture and Anarchy : Thinking Activity

Culture and Anarchy : Thinking Activity

Hello readers!

Here is my blog about culture and Anarchy by Matthew Arnold. Culture and Anarchy is a series of periodical essay by Matthew Arnold. This task is given by Dilip Barad sir Department of English Bhavnagar University.

Culture :-

Culture is a study of perfection. Culture mack its motive curiosity. Culture is the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and Arts.

About my opinion culture is very important about our life. Culture is makes us unique from other parts of the world. Culture is influence their views, their values, their humor. Their hopes, their loyalties and their worries and fears. So culture is a strong part of our life.

Sweetness and light :-

Intelligence, passion and nature. "sweetness" is moral righteousness and "light" is intellectual power and truth.

So I understand that honey is sweetness and camb is light. Sweetness and light united, works to make reason and the will of God prevail. Culture has one great passion, the passion for sweetness and light.

" Doing as one like Archery" :-

              Liberty, character, perfection design.

I understand that Arnold also puts stres on " Beauty" to complete rightly as design it evidently remains to speak also intelligence or light, as a characters of perfection.

Barbarians, philistines, populace.

Barbarians- rich and wealthy people, free minded.

Philistines - the middle class people, not sense of beauty, mony minded people.

Populace - Narrow minded people, bad manner, orthodox, poverty, Rigidity.

The Barbarian or we can say that the aristocratic class. They are champion of personal liberty and often anarchical in their tendencies. Their external styles in manners, accomplish ments and powers are inhabited fromathe Barbarians.

The middle class, known by their wisdom, expert of industry and found busy in industrialization and commerce. Their eternal inclination is to the progress and prosperity of the country.

Populace is known raw and half developed because of poverty and other related diseases. This class is mostly exploited by the barbarian and philistine.

Hebraism and Hellenism :-

Spirit of mind, spirit of Greek, open minded, knowledge, Thought for practical follow the platonic Idea etc.

Spirit of Bible,Narrow Mindedness, Riligious, Thought only for God.

The final aim of Hellenism and Hebraism is the same as man's perfection and salvation. Hebraism and Hellenism both directly connected to the life of human beins. The aim of both is the partaking of divine life with knowledge action. He describes that the Bible reveals the truth which awards the peace of God and liberty.

Necessarium : -

  Liberty
 Authority

This is  a Right reason as a lawful authority. It is easy to show from our practic and current history.

Liberal Practitionaly :-

Consciousness
Philosophy

Liberal Practitionaly is gives some idea about English society, its malice or its disadvantage and also he discuss some solution or shows way towards perfection.

Conclusion :-   we can say that, Matthew Arnold is the first cultural critic or the first systematic critic of cultural studies and his extraordinary Niews in the essay " culture and Anarchy" becomes pioneer work and ways for cultural studies,Anew branch.

                                  Thank you..

Alfred lord tennyson and Robert browning

Alfred lord tennyson and Robert browning

Hello readers!

My blog is related to the victorian poets Alfred Tennyson and Robert browning. So I am sharing different between Alfred Tennyson and Robert browning view about poetry. This task is given by pro, vaidehi hariyani mem in Department of English Bhavnagar University.

  • Introduction

The period of 1850 to 1900 known as the age of 'victoria'. During this period Queen victoria developed the much literary forms. So, this age in English literature known as the 'victorian Age'. During that period many great writers gave their best contribution to English age as a gift. We can also say about this period that the victorian era of British history was the period of Queen victoria's reign from 1837 until her death in 1901. It was a long period of peace, prosperity, refind culture, great advancements in technology, and national self confidence for Britain.

  1.  Alfred lord tennyson

" Ring out the old, ring in the new, Ring, happy bells, across the snow ' The year is going, let him go, Ring out the false, ring in the true.

Lord Alfred Tennyson was born in 1809. He was poet laureate of Great Britain and Ireland during much of Queen victoria's reign and remains one of the most popular British poet. The son of a clergyman he was born at his father's living by in Lincolnshire. After some schooling at south, which was not agreeable to him. He was tacken education form the Cambridge University, at the University he wasa wholly conventional person. Tennyson excellend at pending short lyrics, such as "Break, Break, Break," The charge of the light Brigade, " Tears idle Tears" and " crossing the Bar".

Tennyson also wrote some notable blank verse including idylls of the king, "Ulysses", As a pictorial poet, he follows the example of keats. His all poems most probably based on imagery of nature and other natural and other natural elements. His descriptions of each line built our selves to see the magic of his art and suprisable deep and beautiful scene of the picture of the poem.

  • Tennyson 's poetry

His most famous volumes and poems are :

# The palace of Art
# Locksley Hall sixty years After
# The lotos - Eater
# madeline
# The Lady of Shallot
# Timbuctoo
# Enoch Arden
# Idylls of the king
# Ulysses
# Sabel
# poems, chiefly Lyrical - 1830
# volume of poems - 1833

He started to write at the age of just seventeen and his first volume was published in collaboration with his brother in 1827 named as poem by ' Two Brothers'.

  •  Tennyson's Play

- Becket - 1884
- The Falcon - 1879
- The Foresters - 1892
- Queen marry - 1872
- Harold - 1876

Tennyson's Dramas occupied his later years. He wrote many plays like, historical plays, comedy plays and even plays based on Ribin Hood theme.

We can easily mention method of production of Tennyson's work cause of it's near to perfection and great care and skill shown it his work. He was expert in handing of English metres.

 2.  Robert Browning

"Take away love and our earth is a tomb".
Robert Browning was born in camberwell, In 1812. His father was outwardly a businessman and he was united with Bank of England, as a clerk for fifty years. He was an English poet and playwright whose mastery of dramatic verse, especially dramatic monologues, made him one of the foremost victorian poets. He truly observer of Renaissance period. And he admire for it. The Renaissance saw a major shift in theries of Art. He use to read shelly from his predecessors and he was so much inspired by shelly. He went to Russia, in 1833 for small phase of time. He done very brife course at inspiration, growth is done by Shelly's writings and that was the time of his self development. In 1845 he met Elizabeth Barret, the poetess, who work had strongly, the attracted him, and so Elizabeth Barratt became Elizabeth Barratt Browning in very short time.

Robert Browning was famous for his dramatic monologues.and commentary on social institutions. He was married to victorian poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning. All of these aspects make the Rannaissance and the victorian Era rather similar By talking about the Rannaissance, Browning can make his cultural criticism somewhat less biting.

  • Browning 's poetry

His first work is pauline and it was written in 1833. This poem also shows very strong influence of shally upon Browning' s writing. Browning held shelly in great reverence. His most famous and noticeable poems are as under.

  • Prophyria 's Lover
  • A Toccata of Galuppi' s
  • Two in the campagna
  • Andrea del sarto
  • Home - Thoughts, from Abroad
  • Fra Lippo Lippi
  • My last Duchess
  • Soliloquy of the spanish

  • Browning 's plays :

He wrote several plays but all his plays are without moments of drama, and all his plays, shown considerable spirit in their style his plays like.

  • A Blot on the' scutcheon - 1843
  • The Return of the Druses - 1843
  • Pippa passes - 1841
  • Bells and pomegranantes - 1846
  • Colombe's Birthday - 1844
  • King victor and king charles - 1842

But some of his plays contain fine songs. But Browning lacks the fundamental qualities of the dramatist. His amazing subtle analysis of character and motive is not sufficient for true and real drama because he cannot reveal character in action.

Comparison between tennyson and Robert browning

Tennyson and Browning are the two literary titans of the victorian age who towered over all other poets of the period for about help a contury. Victorianisam differs from Romanticism in dramatic ways. For instance, Romanticism presented on idealized view of nature and of the joys of simple rural living. For victorian, nature became a cold hard reality Tennyson even refers to nature's bloodied claws. However as poets they have very little in common. While Tennyson was completely a representative of his age who glorified the greatness of England, it's democracy and freedom and dreamed of ' The world', Browning kept apart from all the political and religious turmoil of the age if such things as Reform Bills, Catholic Emancipation, the crimean war,The Indian mutiny that never been.

These two poets are, as can be seen, very different in theri approach to the idea of the narrative. Tennyson present beautiful scences, indeed he cannot help but do so even when the subject matter is supposed to be dull, and he offers many images which can be plucked from the poems and kept like little Jewels on their own. Browning 's poems are less lovely by more lively and his focus is far less on conveying the inner life of his characters.

Both the poets apply new technique and styles in poetry writing. But both these poets adopt their own style in their writing. Browning focuses on the psyche of his frantic characters and tries to look into deep inside of such characters in his writing. Browning tries to understand human nature, religion, and society properly. Their poetic concerns are hardly related, Browning systematic cally deoictd the essence of a character whereas Tennyson gives importance in inducing and endorsing a particular mood.

We can say that victorian period is also a promoted through the English development and it's connect their roots with Renaissance time for a full half century Tennyson was the voice of England, loved and as a mab and a poet, not smol by a few discerning critics, but by a whole people that do not easily give their allegiance to anyone man.

Difference between George Eliot & Charles Dickens

"our dead are never dead to us, until we have forgotten them.
George Eliot

Poem 's :-

    # Agath (1868)

Charles Dickens

" The pain of parting is nothing    to the joy of meeting again".

Charles Dickens was born on 7th February 1812 and died on 9 June 1870. Charles John Huffam Dikens was an English writer and social critic. His work enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his fetime and by the 20 th century. He enjoyed mimicry and popular enter tainment, lacked a clear, specific sense of what he wanted to become and yet knew he wanted to fame. In November 1836, Dikens accepted the position of editor of Bentely's miscellany, a position he held for three year. Until he fell out with the owner Dickense's batter known stories and was the first victorian novels with a child protagonist. His notable works are.

  • Oliver Twist
  • Hard time's
  • Edwin Drood
  • Bleak House
  • The Pickwick paper
  • Nicholas Nickleby

  • The old curiosity shop
Dickense's approach to the novel is influenced by various things including the picaresques novels tradition, melodrama and the novel of sensibility. His writing style is marked by a profuse linguistic creativity.

Difference :-

While in charles Dickens novel one very common theme is Poverty. We see this theme in Oliver Twist. Dickens was writing during the industrial revaluation in london and the stark contrast between the wealthy and the poor was more prevalent thanevere befor.

The complex character and plots of George Eliot's novels all make for intresting read and challenge to think more seriously about choice in love, their person ambition and deepest inhibitions. For example her famous novel middle march.

Difference between victorian and romantic period

Romantic period and victorian period are two notable periods in literature. The romantic period was an artistic and literary movement that end of the 18th century. Victorian period is the period during the reign of Queen victoria. The main difference between romantic and victorian poetry is that Romantic poets revered and adored nature. Whereas victorian poets regarded nature as in a more realistic and less idealistic angel.

Thinking Activity : Derrida & Deconstruction

Thinking Activity :- Derrida & Deconstruction

Hello readers!

Here I would like to write blog about Derrida 's Deconstruction. Jacques Derrida is the father of Deconstruction. I would like something wrote about Deconstruction in my understanding. This task is given by Dilip Barad sir Department of English MKBU university Bhavnagar.

Hear is Dilip Barad sir' s blog about Deconstruction.

https://dilipbarad.blogspot.com/2015/03/deconstruction-and-derrida.html so lets start about Derrida' Deconstruction.

Jacques Derrida

Jacques Derrida is the father of Deconstruction. Deconstruction is one of the several doctrines in contemporary philosophy often loosely held under the umbrella terms post- Structuralism and post - modernism. Derrida coined the term in the 1960's and proved more forthcoming with nagative, rather than a pined for positive, analyzes of the school.

Derrida says, Deconstruction is a world whose fortunes have disagreement surprised me. Derrida 's Disclaimers present a major obstacle to any attempt, to encapsulate his thoughts, he tells that deconstruction is neither an analytical nor a critical tool, neither a method, nor an opretion, nor an act perform on text by a subject.

  • Derrida' s Definition

Derrida says that Deconstruction is an approach to understanding the relationship between text and meaning.

The purpose of deconstruction is to show that the usage of language in a given text, and language as a whole, are irreducibly complex, unstable, or impossible.

  • Post structuralist

Post structuralism denotes a way of theorizing that emerged around the 1950,predominantly in france among otherwise extremely diverse intellectuals. Post structuralist authors all present different critiques of structuralism, but common themes include the rejection of the self - sufficiency of structuralism, and an interrogation of the binary oppositions that constitute its structures.

For example

Satyamev jayate is an outstanding action thriller. Its gripping from the start to finish and is packed with exhilarating action, thrills, music, performance, emotions and yes dialogues.

I saw that film is a serial killer on the prowl who is literally burning to ashes all the corrupt officers on his list in Mumbai city. A cat and mouse chuse ensues and the officer is unaware that the cold blooded killer is closer home.

In this film director thinks of only the minority community as probable victims in this film as the policemen are shown inflicting torture and harassing mostly vulnerable Muslims. Even the tense situations appear hilarious unless you are the hyper sensitive variety then you may not able to digest the overdoes of violence therein.

Satymev jayate is strong and a bit gory, but nothing as a whole is like an a rated film. I even saw family audience coming to see it.

So deconstruction and post structuralist are similar structuralism is different from other and his concept is most of including all narrative techniques.

                                                    Thank you....

  • What is Structuralism?

Structuralism is the methodology that implies elements of human culture must be understood by way of their relationship to a broader, overarching system or structure. It works to uncover the structures that underlie all the things that humans do, think, perceive and feel.

Structuralism as a method is pecuniary imitable to literary criticism which is a Discourse upon a Discourse. Literary criticism in that it is metalingustic in character and comes into being existence as meta literature.

Structuralism critics found basic common structure in every work. As all the human beings have a same structure from inside, similarly literature has basic structure and it is same everywhere whether it movies, Tv. Serials or advertisement.

So here being a structuralist I am going to analysis gujarati movie "ચાલ જીવી લઈએ" Directed by vipul Mehta. With the different perspective or term of structuralism like.

" ચાલ જીવી લઈએ"

ચાલ જીવી લઈએ is a story of a father-son's unplanned journey to escape a workaholic existence. The duo, Aditya parikh and his father Bipin chandra parikh explore the meaning of life as they mert a stranger traveler named ketki, who takes them on a journey of surprises and realizations that strengthened their bond with every situation that tests their drifting relationship. So it is similar concept of the other movie.

"Article 15"

The film is based on article 15 of the indian constitution, which prohibits dis discrimination on grounds of religion, race, cast, sex, or place of birth. While not based on one specific event. The film is inspired by multiple true life events including 2014 badaun gang rape allegations and 2016 flogging incident.

"Fire and Ice - By Robert Frost"

Here by reading the poem I can say that rejection of authorical intention and advocacy of polygamy lead us towards the various different meaning of the poem. Here poet take same words Ice and Fire but hidden meaning of it and how they connect with it different kinds of metapher her os totals opposite.

"Tarak mahta ka ulta chasma"

An event can occur once and be narrated an times crepetivites for example serial Tarak mehta ka ulta chasma. In this serial once time event happen but narrative more one time.

So Genette concept structuralism is different from other and his concept is most of including all narrative techniques.

                                                  Thank you...

Thinking Activity : Northrop Frye

Thinking Activity : Northrop Frye

Hello readers...

I would like to wrote Northrop Frye 's Archetypal criticism. This Thinking Activity is given by Dr Dilip Barad sir. In literary criticism the term Archetypes denotes recurrent narratives designs, patterns of action, character types, themes, and images which are identifiable in a wide variety of works of literature.

  Frye's Definition of Archetypal criticism

" in literary criticism the term Archetype suggests narrative designs, patterns of action, character types, themes and images which are known to a wide verity of works of literature also to myths, dreams and even social rituals''

(1) what is Archetypal criticism? What does the archetypal critic do?

Ans. Archetypal literary criticism is a type of critical theory that interprets a text by focusing on recurring myths and archetypes in the narrative, symbols, images, and character types in literary works. As an acknowledged from of literary criticism it dates back to 1934 when maud Bodking published Archetypal patterns in poetry.

Archetypal critic would suggest that all human experience is connected through literature and this experience is expressed again and again by asing the same pattern throughout time and space. There are some universal truthes that we can learn by reading.

(2) what is Frye typing to prove by giving an analogy of 'physics to nature' and criticism to literature.

Ans. Northrop Frye given archetypal criticism to connecting with cycle of nature, he also season connected with mood of human being.

Comedy with spring
Romance with summer
Tragedy with Autumn
Satire & Irony with winter

Frye also said that students of literature never learnt special subject of physics but when they learnt about nature at that time by enlarge studing about physics. He gives five different views or different fields like, human, animal, vegetation mineral and water.

(3) share your views of criticism as an organised body of knowledge mention relation of literature with history and philosophy.

Ans. Criticism is as an organised body of knowledge. So it is progressive way of literature. But literature never organised it should free from it for the progress of literature. So that my idea became progressive and logical and mind was sharpen through logical arguments. Historical sense has deep thought and pasteness. Frye also talked that without thinking to go on conclusion, it is not right way. We always look on the framework of history which the based on evidence.

(4) Briefly explain inductive method with illustration of Shakespeare's Hamlet's Grave Bigger's scene.

Ans. Inductive method was mostly used by writer. In this method specifies a journey from specific to general. In the grave digging scene in Hamlet is a specifics scene, we made the general conclusion like, grave digger scene is centrifugal which moves us away from center.

Hamlet is the grave digger scene is the example of it. It is specifically things. In the hamlet Ophelia 's death is center whether her death is nature and accident or suicide victims not normally buried in churchyard in those days. So with the specific scenes we come to the genera illustrations.

(5) Briefly explain Deductive method with reference to an analogy to music, painting, rhythm and patten. Give example of outcome of Deductive method.

Ans. In the Deductive method is come from. General to specific or particular observations. In this music has rhyme and painting has patterns. Both are connected while listening the music of the first time we can't understand but when we start to understand the words we image a picture in the mind by this imagination we understand the things. As the same thing happens while reading literature we image the things through the imagination it helps us to understand the literature. So music, rhythm, painting, patterns so it helps to understand the literature.

(6) Refer to the Indian seasonal grid (below) if you can, please read small Gujarati or Hindi poem from Archetypal approach and apply India seassonal grid in the interpretation.

Ans.

India has gifted various seasonable grid by nature. In our literature poet also write upon season and nature, so hear i am going to present short stanza of the poem in this following English poem represented briefly about four seasons.

Moreover i would like to share one Gujarati poem. This poem interpretation about Indian Riligious. In this poem, poet used archetypal character like as, Temple, Sun, Moon, poet etc.

                                  Thank you.
