Cultural studies - workshop by Dr. Kalyani vallath

Cultural studies - workshop by Dr. Kalyani vallath

Hello readers!

Hear is my blog about cultural studies workshop by Dr. Kalyani vallath. Kalyani Ma'am is come from kerala for teaching at the Department of English. It was really faithful session. We enjoyed learning throughout the day and gain alot of knowledge about cultural studies.

We have cultural studies as a paper in our syllabus and also as we know now cultural studies is included in Net_examination. So the clarification and the guidelines are more important. So that clarification is given by Ma'am. She had talked about many points that is very unknown for me.

* what is your understanding about the concept of cultural studies?

About my understanding on cultural studies. Our culture is so different than other culture. How relate cultural studies with literature is very important in cultural studies. Cultural studies provide us with invaluable skills in writing. Thinking and expression. It was truly a dynamic effective and energetic day where we learned the most valuable lessons from cultural studies and had a vigorous discussion with Dr. Kalyani Ma'am.

* How would you explain a layman about cultural studies?

I would explain to a layman about cultural studies. So i will give a very simple example which example is given by Dr kalyani medam in the session. In the kerala most people are non vegetarians, so people are cut goats and other animals and they are eating and also drink it's blood because of poverty. But not all people of kerala eat and drink the blood of animals.

* If you are asked in interview to teach cultural studies - How would you introduce it.

If I asked in interview to teach cultural studies than I introduce it in very simple manner. I asked some basic questions about cultural studies. And I introduce it with very simple examples. How cultural studies engage with literature and day to day life.

* How many examples from the sessions were so catchy that you will never forget it?

Kalyani Ma'am gave very easy example for understanding us. I am sure that we all remain forever. In whole day we got many information about culture like how to deal with different culture, what matters for culture, human perspective etc. Main gave example like, high - class people and uper class people.

* Anything else..

We Hartly thankful to Dr. Kalyani _vallath Ma'am for coming in English Department and giving us a new way to thinking and giving us a broad horizon to think about cultural studies. We also thankful to Dr. Dilip Barad sir for arranging this workshop.

Thank you so much Dilip Barad sir for this wonderful certificate.

Shashi Tharoor's An Era Of Darkness

Shashi Tharoor's An Era Of Darkness

Hello readers!

Welcome to my blog, I would like to write blog on the famous book An Era of Darkness written by shashi Tharoor. This blog task is given by Dilip Barad sir, Department of English MKBU university Bhavnagar.

About the author :

Shashi Tharoor is born on 9 March 1956. He is an Indian politician writer and a former international diplomat. Who is currently serving asmember of Parliament, lok sabha from Thiruvananthapuram, kerla, since 2009.he also serves as chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on Information Technology. And All India professional Technology.

Tharoor is an acclaimed writer, having authored 18 bestselling work of fiction and non - fiction since 1981, which are centred on India and its history, culture, film, politics, society, foreign policy, and more related theames. Shashi Tharoor gets sahitya academic Award for his book "An Era of Darkness" in a non-fiction category in English language lets see about the book 'The Era of Darkness'. The British Empire in India.

Era of Darkness :

Shashi Tharoor's latest, An Era of Darkness, is one breathless read. In it, he aggregates all the arguments required to establish that British colonial rule was an awful experience for indians and he does so with a consummate debater's skill. His book is,in fact, an expanded take on British exploitation of india that famously carried the day for Tharoor in an carried the day for Tharoor in an Oxford debate not too long ago.

Tharoor is an excellent orator, well-spoken, warm and articulate, his Cambridge university speech inspired this book. What is surprising is or, on reflection, perhaps not, is an greater a orator as Tharoor is, his writing style, although well-research and engaing, is didactic and lacks the elegance of his vocal abilities, some of his puns lose their verve without  the cadence of his voice, some of his homities become slightly.

This is not an academic text and there is no way that Tharoor can cover over two hundred years of history in detail in a book this size and nor does he attempt to do so. He does point the reader to where these sources can be found. As can be imagined there were screams of outrange in the British press. One hilarious example is an article im history Today which while recognizing famine and massacre, criticizes.

Actually we are the future of this nation who is locked in a room and what our system teaches us is looking at our past through a peephole. The fault is not completely of the system we are also not interested in our past. We are the generation who are creating a future without having any idea of our past.

In his latest book shashi Tharoor dared to divide the grey zone clearly into black and white. With great research and the arguments which the author about how a country which was far behind us came to our nation and changed our nation forever.

I have not read this book but heard his panel discussions on this book. His views regarding the plunder and pillaging caused by the British rule are accurate he has done through research supported by statistics. He gives us a true insight about the dark side of the East India company. Their main objective was to rampage and loot us so that we could fill the conffers of britaniat.

Death in literature : john keats

Death in literature : John keats

Hello readers!

This Thinking Activity given by Pro, heenaba Zala. Department of English Bhavnagar University. I would like to sher my point of view on death. And wrote about the famous poet john keats.

John keats

John keats was an English Romantic poet. He was one of the main figures of the second generation of Romantic poets, along with Lord Byron and P. B. Shelley, despite his works having been in publication for only four years before his death from the age of 25.

Keats popular poems:

" ode on melancholy"
"ode on a Grecian urn"
"ode to Autuman"
"ode to Nightingale"
"La Belle Damesanse mercy"
"Imitation of spenser"
"Hyperion"
" Isabella".

John keats is a paragon figure in the realm of English Romantic poetry. He weres this mantle mostly for the virtusity of his language, but his untimely death-from tuberculosis, at 25 years old and in the prime of his writing life certainly plays a role in his reputation of "Romantic" poet.

* Death in literature

What is death?

Death is the end of a life in an organism. All biological and living activity of the living thing stop, including the mind and the senses. The single for death in humans and many other animals is that the heart stops beating and cannot be restarted. Death of humans id often investigated for the cause, in case of crime, accident or disease that mau continue to kill other humans.

When people talk about things or events that lead to the death of a plant or animal, those things or events are usually described as being deadly, or fatal.

*Why has keats been "half in love" with death in keats" "ode to a Nightingale"?

In ode to Nightingale keats wishes to be like the Nightingale because it has not worry or no concept of mortality. Keats was always painfull aware of death. He feared dying at a young age. In the second stanza of this poem, he speaks of an escape from this awfull awareness, asking for a "draught of uintage" so that he might...

" Darkling I listen;and for many timd.
I have been half in love with easful death...
Still woulest thou sing, and I have ears in vain
To they high requiem become a sod.

In this stanza the poet is so much feel with esstatic delight by the song of the Nightingale that he thinks it to be the most appropriate moment to die, keats says he has an instinative attraction for death, because death would end all his troubles. Death would soothe him. So that I believe this is the best time of embrace death.

                  Thank you......

Hello readers!

This blog task related to well known author chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. This task given by Dilip Barad sir in our thinking activity.

While she was growing up, her father jumes Nwoye Adichie was a professor of statistics at the university of Nigaria. In an interview published in the financial Times in july 2016.Adichie revealed that she had a baby daughter. In a profiel of Adichie, published in the new yorker in june 2018.

In this video chimamanda Ngozi Adichie tolls about the denger of single story and the argues inherent in the"all young American men are serial killers and author things that generation dominant, culture, stereotypes, society.

So, my opinion is that she talks about this view something is became in society. Thus the culture is good.

(2) we should all be Feminist

After the watching video I like this video and she tells about faminist.

What is faminist :- Being a faminist means that you fight for the equality of all people its import that your feminism id intersectional, it sould not exclude people based on their gender, race, socioeconomic status, ability or sexual orientation.

A woman can do everything and she always, struggling in life and not seft in the society.

Example :- sita in Ramayana,Draupadi in Mahabharata, and some of the movie like Akira, pink, Mardani, marry come, Rani padmavati etc.

(3) Talk on importance of Truth in post Truth era.

In this video she talks about importance of Truth in post Truth era.

Post truth is a philosophical and political concept that refers to "the disappearance of shared objective standards for truth" and the"crircutions slippage between facts or alt facts.

While the term post - truth is relatively recent, the concept can be traced back to earlier moral epistemic and political debates about relativisam.

Post truth politics is a political culture in which debate is a framed largely by appeals to emotion disconnected from the details of policy, and by the repeated assertion of talking point.

The story is set in Ayemenem, now part of Kottayam district in kerala, India, the temporal setting shifts back and forth between 1969,when fraternal twins Rahel and Esthappen are seven year old, and 1993,when the twins are reunited.

Though Rahel and Estha are both protagonists of this novel, we get to know Rahel more completely as since we spend significantly more time seeing the world through her eyes. As a child, Rahel exists in a kind of harmony with Estha, her twin brother Who is eighteen minutes her senior. Their personalities seem to balance each other. Esth is serious and earnest, Rahel becomes preoccupied with things and can't seen to sit still. Estha seems to be the better behaved of the two Rahel is the one who hides in the dirty airport curtains when she doesn't want to say hi to sophia mol.

We learn that Estha really the only reason she returns. Even though she hasn't seen him in 23 year, we can sense that he's still most important person in her life. Whenever they are close, they don't even have to speak to know the other is there. They still have an innate sense of being completed by each other. This sort of helps explain why Rahel and Estha have sex at the end of the book. Although the idea of incest is really uncomfortable for most readers. Being together makes the two haves a complex whole.

# The Ministry of Utmost Happiness .....

The Ministry of utmost happiness is the second novel by Indian writer Arundhati roy, published in 2017. The ministry of utmost happiness takes us on an intimate jorny of many years across the Indian subcontinent from the cramped neighbourhoods of old Delhi and the roads of the new city to the mountains and valleys of Kashmir and beyond, where war is peace and peace is war.

It is an aching love story and a decisive remonstration, a story told in a whisper, in a shout, Through u sentimental tears and sometimes with a bitter laugh. Each of its characters is indelible. Tenderly rendered. Its heroes are people who have been broken by the world they live in and then rescued. Patched together by acts of love and by hope.

As this ravishing, deeply humane novel braids these lives together, it relivents what a novel can do and can be. The ministry of utmost happiness miracle of arundhati Roy's storytelling gifts.

                                            Thank you....

Thinking activity : Frankenstein

Frankenstein by mary shelley

Hello readers!

This blog task given by Heenaba zala. Thinking activity in the famous novel Frankenstein by mary shelley.

Frankenstein is a novel written by Mery Shelley. who was famous novelist in the Romantic Age. Frankenstein is a novel about victor Frankenstein, who is scientist creates the monster as a scientific experiment. Obsessed with discovering the cause of generation and life and bestowing animation upon lifeless matter, Frankenstein assembles a human being from stolen body parts but, upon bringing it to life, he recoils in horror at the creature's hideousness. Tormented by isolation and loneliness, the once - innocent creater turns to evil and unleashed a campaign of murderous revenges against his creator, Frankenstein.

# what is the difference between the movie and the novel?

As we know book is so deep and so long and so boring some time but when we tak about movie is so short and complete the story on 2-3 hours and use all things and not much deep and some time for better understanding we also show movies and take help of the movie.

In the beginning of the novel by Merry shelly, there is description about the place where, Frankenstein and his family lives and also narration with some facts. While in the movie that descriptive part is absent.

# Dose the movie help you understand narrative structure of the novel?

Movie helps a lot to understand the narrative structure of the novel. Because ' visual speaks more than words' in the novel we can only read the text. While in the movie we can see visual pictures of any perticular science. It helps in lot to remember the plot of the story. Director play such a great story and also giving a horror effect in the movie.

# Do you think the movie is helpful to understand the view points of different characters.

Movie create such a great understanding of the novel and we also understand the novel by the movie. Because director use originals dialogues in the movie and use many view points about the characters. Victor is inventor and he invent such a great thing and he creat man after his death and he was successful but he also make mistake and his invention look is so dangerous and people call him monster.

# what do you think about the Creation of lady monster in the novel and Elizabeth's look of a monster in movie?

Elsa lanchester as the monster's Bride with Boris karloff as the monster in  bride's conical hairdo, with its while lighting trace streaks on each side, has become an iconic symbol of both the character and the film. Victor can't create any monster in the book or also in the movie. Victore invent such a great thing but for his some small mistake he look like monster, Elizabeth is his wife and love so he accept her and she is not monster in the movie.

# Think about Victor's acceptance of Elizabeth and rejection of the monster.

We know that there are little bit changes in the original novel and the movie by Kenneth Branagh, Because marry shelly, while her description of creation rather than see it or look it but in the movie we can see that how victor Frankenstein creates the lady monster is the result of broke the promise of the monster by victor Frankenstein. Victor love Elizabeth so much so he accept her and in last he think about his first creation. His also look like monster and he can't accept him because of his look and also society.

# Do you think the director is faithful to the novel?

Kenneth Branagh is faithful to the novel. Yes there are some changes in the movie but still Kenneth Branagh become successful to give different shapes to the movie.

                                   Thank you......

Romantic Age with nature

Nature :

Here I would like to write blog on nature, what is nature for me, what is my feelings in natural beauty and how natural things teach us life lessons.

The word nature is derived from the Latin word nature, or 'essential qualities innate disposition', and in ancient times, literally meant birth. Nature is a Latin translation of the Greek word physics, wich originally related to the intrinsic characteristics that plants, animals, and other features of the world develop of their own accord. The concept of nature as a whole, the physical universe, is one of several expansions of nature.

# my understanding with nature...

When we are surrounded by nature. Natural things and beauty provides us aesthetic delight. The air smells sweeter, the sun burns brighter, nature is our origin and the place, where all our subtle needs for beauty. Mystery and adventure are met. Nature holds many gifts for us but if we prove willing to explore its diversity.

Nature could be simply described as the things which are not made by human beings. The importance of nature could never be ignored since the survival of human race on this planet is only possible because of nature. The air we breathe, the food we eat or the house we live in are the gifts of our mother nature.

The nature has provided enough to serve the needs of the human civilization by the Greek of the people has made activities, be it unprecedented industrialization, deforestation or pollution of all types.

The surroundings we live in, the natural resources or food we consume are all parts of nature. Nature provides the sustainable environment and necessary resources essential for the survival like air, water, soil etc.

Nature helps to flourish the ecosystem and biodiversity of our planet by providing all the necessary resources required for their growth and development trees, plants and forest are the vital parts of nature which provide oxygen. The bccsic requirement for the survival of any living beings. The chirping of brides, buzzing of insects and rusting of leaves are the sound of nature which relaxed our mind and calms our soul from within.

Matthew Arnold's poetry and criticism

Matthew Arnold 's poetry & criticism

Matthew Arnold was an English poet and cultural critic who worked as an inspector of schools. Matthew Arnold was born on 24 December 1822 and died on 15 April 1888,He was son of thomas Arnold.

" Matthew Arnold", wrote G. W. E. Russell in portraits of the seventies, is "a man of the world entirely free from world in and a man of letters without the faintest trace of pedantry", Arnold was a familiar figure at the Athenaeum club. And in the intervals of supporting himself and his family by the quiet drudgery of school inspecting. Filled notebook after notebook with meditations of an almost monastic tone.

Good poetry and criticism

Matthew Arnold's poetry includes reflections on life, an appreciation for the culture and thought of classical antiquity, and contemplation of the shortcomings of modern life. One of the best example of these themes is his poem 'Dover Beach'.

Dover Beach is set on the English side of the strait of Dover, the point in England closest to continental Europe. The poem features a speaker addressing. His beloved, describing the beautiful view of the waves and the sounds of the seashore.

Criticism

Arnold's interest in classical antiquity is also found in his literary criticism. He placed great value in the poetry of classical source like homer, and he wrote about the need for modern poets to learn from the old masters. Modern life, in his view, was too focused on the material world.

Arnold's poem 'Empedocles on Etna' combines the themes of classical antiquity and sadness together, written in blank verse, this poem is comprised primarily of in-rhymed lines. It explores the thoughts and feeling of the Greek philoshopher Empedocles in the houres before his death.

  • 'THE PURPOSE THEORY OF SUBALTERN
' the purpose 'written by T. P. Kailasam is a short in the mahabharata invovling Drona, Arjuna, and Eklavya. Drona is a skilled teacher. Renown throughout the land of his wisdom and skill. In the field of literature we have many form of art like Drama, short story, novel poetry, Essays etc. In the form of the Indian writing we find many well known dramatist who wrote very beautiful drama or play like Tagore, Aurobindo, Harindranath Chattopadhyay, T. P. kailasam etc.
  • Eklavya story in Mahabharata
This Eklavya story based on Adiparva from Mahabharata. Mahabharata is indian Epic and Eklavya was a This Eklavya story based on Adiparva from Mahabharata. Mahabharata is indian Epic and Eklavya was a nishada boy. He was a poor hu hunter, He wanted to Dronacharya and requested him to teach archery. Drona was the teacher of the royal family. Arjun was disciple of Drona in gurukul. At that time as  a rule that only king's son and Brahmins were study in Gurukul not any common people like Eklavya wanted to learn Archery very deeply so on the other side Drona could not accepted but he made a statue of his Guru Drona and start his practice and after many years he became a good archer and one day guru Drona and Arjuna find Eklavya, they know that he became good archer at that time Arjuna became very angry and asked guru what is this? And then Guru asked Gurudakshina at that time Eklavya gave his thumb without any hesitation.

  • Mining of the Subaltern

It refers to the populations that are socially, politically and geographically outside of the hegemonic power structure of the colony and of the colonial homeland. The term "'Subaltern " is used in the fields of history, anthropology, sociology, human geography and literary criticism.

In postcolonial theory the term subaltern describes the lower class people and who are at the margins of a society. We find that. Many people are subaltern and many cast also in our India.

  • Subaltern in 'the purpose '

A subaltern is someone with law ranking in social. Political, or other hierarchy, it can also means someone who has been marginalised or oppressed.

The term subaltern describes the lower social classes and the other social groups displaced to the margins of a society, in an imperial colony, a Subaltern is a native manor women without human agency. As defined by his and her social status nonetheless, the feminist scholar gayatri Chakraborty spivak cautioned against an over broad application of the term the subaltern.

After examine the character of Eklavya are marginalised in ancient society Eklavya has to suffers a lot. Eklavya faces all the problems and do lots of struggles he comes out with flying colors and emerge as the tragic hero of the play 'The purpose'.

Resemblance and antithesis between Arjun and Eklavya when we talk about these two major characters first of all we have to discussed that, that there are some similarities and some differentiate between there two character. So let's have as briefly look on that.

Arjun character in"The Purpose "is portrayed as a rude and self - proud person while in original text he is very humble and gread.

Than I was read this story I can Understand that Drona is ideal teacher because, Eklavya was the son of a poor hunters. He wanted to learn archery to save the deer in the forest that were being hunted by the leopards. So he want to Dronacharya and requested him to teach him archery. Dronacharya was the teacher of the royal family.

This is not far Eklavya in his heart had already accepted Dronacharya as his guru. He went home and made a Stata of his guru and practice. He learn archery and became better than the state princess at the arts. He became so good at that, he would hear the sound of the animal. Shootan arrow at it and claim the animals.

One day, Aryana, the prince found out about this talented archer. Making matters worse, he saw that Eklavya was far better than him. He went to Eklavya and asked him, who throught you archery? "

Dronacharya blessed Eklavya with immortality by asking him for his thumb so when people think of devotion they think of Eklavya, and not Arjuna.

In the play Arjuna was a small boy who goes to guru Drona 's ashram for learning archery with pandava and cousin brothers kauravas. Guru Dronacharya was best teacher of archary bhisma knows that so he sent his grand children to learn archery from him ni the mahabharata Arjun was fast learner archery and he is favourite student of guru Dronacharya gives promise to him that he became best archery in the world.

  • Eklavya 's character of the purpose
Eklavya is the protagonist of this play' The purpose he is a nishada boy. He also wants to become the best archer of the world. He always speaks whether he thinks to be true. He had gret esteem. He really likes the technique of guru Dronacharya but he also recognize Arjun as his companion. Eklavya is the main character of T. P. Kailasam's play "The purpose" it is taken from the mahabharata in Mahabharata he is not powerful character, but in this play he is powerful character drawn by T. P. Kailasam. He was a nishada boy. Once he was tack with his mother about archery that he wants to become best archer. In that world, that time his mother told him that guru Dronacharya was the best teacher for archery if he accept you as a student so you became best archery. That time he decided that he learn archery from guru Dronacharya.

  • Comparison between Arjun and Eklavya
The similarity between both the characters is that both want to become the world's best archer. Though the aim is same, the purpose for it is different. Arjuna has the personal purpose and Eklavya's purpose is to save the animals. So we can say here that this all the things are about "The purpose" that how the purpose is different from each other. So here we can say that the title of this play is appropriate and well chose by the playwright of his play.

  • Conclusion :-
This play was situated to education in school and college. Was not productive wich would break down the social, rilligional and linguistics barriers. It never homed at makin people masters of technology it also did not focus on fighting injustices, intolerance and superstition this was the play the purpose.
                                 Thank you...
