Hello readers!
Here I would like to wrote about " waiting for Godot" written by Samuel Beckett.
The movie " waiting for Godot" is directed by Michael Lindsay - Hogg. In this 2001 movie, Barry megovern and Johnny Murphy played vladimir and Estragon, where as Lucky and pozzo were performed by Alan stand ford and stephan Brennan respectively.
About the Auther
Samuel Barelay Beckett was born 1906 and he was died on 1989. He was an Irish writer. He write various from in English language. He write this from like play wright short story. He was famous as director, poet, and literary translator. He write in both English and French. He was famous English writer in his time.
So here I would like to wrote some question about the movie screening for waiting for Godot. This was may sir 's blog so let's see question.
Q:- 1 What connection do you see in the setting("A country road. A tree. Evening.) of the play and these paintings.
Ans :- In the picture we can find the picture is drawing by Caspar David Friedrich in September 5,1774. In the pic we can find the setting. The title of this painting is ' longing', here longing means deep desire for something. Waiting is connected with longing. In the painting two person see towards sunrise and sunset, it stand for bright hope and despair and in the play we find similar things. So when we look towards painting we find that in painting they have desire and then when we look towards Beckett's play both waiting for something.
Q :- 2 The tree is the only important 'thing' in the setting. What is the importance of tree in both acts? Why does Beckett grow a few leaves in Act 2 on the barren tree- The tree has four or five leaves?
Ans :- In the play three also becomes the symbol and when we find that without leaves of tree. That picture gives some nagative in our mind. Many time tree symbolically presented in the play when vladimir and Estragon try to be hebitate like tree. So, leaves stand for hope and despair. So in the play Estragon and vladimir both are waiting for Godot. And both are desire to meet with Godot. They are waiting first day that Godot never came. On the tree new leaves grow. So it gives hope. So tree gives positivity that another day Godot definitely come. So tree becomes a symbol of hope.
Q :- 3 In both acts, evening falls into night and moon rises. How would you like to interpret this 'Coming for night and moon' when actually they are Waiting For Godot?
Ans :- In this picture we see that both wait for Godot and wait also nightfall. They believe that every night and moon come that time we will waiting for Godot. In the play repetition are there. But when we read the play and watch the movie we find that repetition also becomes the part of play and movie. That repetition also suggests something. So that repetition also creates new meaning. So it becomes a part of text and movie. So in another way night also gives a hope to wait for another day. They also wait for nightfall.
Q:- 4 The director feels the setting with some debris. Can you read any meaning in the contours of debris in the setting of the play?
Ans :- so In the movie director uses debris In the setting of the play. So in the setting debris there. Because of debris we cannot see the path. Here we can see about the debris in waiting for Godot. In the play we can see the setting of debris is Any area, non - dependent of locale, space, or contour, that contains the debris of wreckage, impact, sinking or other material that once constitude a complete object.
Q :- 5 play begins with the dialogue "Nothing to be done". how does the theme of 'nothingness' recurs in the play?
Ans :- "nothing to be done" reflects the Existentialism. This theory shows that the life is meaningless, whatever you do it has no ultimate meaning But nobody came another day also. So in the play both act looks similar. No any plot main theme is waiting but nobody came both also not sure that who is Godot, and when Godot came, in which from, they does not know the appearance of Godot. So there is no beginning and no complete and. That's why nothingness there in the play.
Q :- 6 Do you agree: "The play (Waiting for Godot), we agreed, was a positive play, not negative, not pessimistic. As I saw it, with my blood and skin and eyes, the philosophy is: 'No matter what- atom bombs, hydrogen bombs, anything- life goes on. You can kill yourself, but you can't kill life."(E.G. Marshal who played Vladimir in original Broadway production 1950s)?
Ans :- yes, I am agree with the play waiting for Godot. The point of E. G. Marshal that the play waiting for Godot is positive play in the sense of life is goes on we can not stop or kill the time. That's why sometimes they become hipper to prove their point of view. The play It make us aware about our own importance in our life more than God. People can do anything without fear of God. It shows nature of nature that doesn't effected by anything.
Q:-7 How are the props like hat and boots used in the play? What is the symbolical significance of these props?
Ans :- Samuel Beckett used meany symbols in this play in which Hat and Boot are interesting symbols. We can say that hut represented the intellectual, mental, ability and thinking and boot represent lower and physical appearance. So it becomes a symbol of master salve relationship. One is in top position. So another is in bottom and that situation construntly happens in society. One becomes poor and another becomes rich.
Q:- 8 Do you think that the obedience of Lucky is extremely irritating and Nauseatic? Even when the master Pozzo is blind, he obediently hands the whip in his hand. Do you think that such a capacity of slavishness is unbelievable?
Ans :- yes, The obedience of Lucky is extremely irritating and nauseatic. Because this slavish behavior suggest that you are binded or habituated with the this thing. Sometimes in very child age some becomes habituated to follow the rules of mester. Whatever their master says they does whatever their master. They can't say any word to master. They forgets their strength, they serve their master like God.
Q:- 9 Who according to you is Godot? God? An object of desire? Death? Goal? Success? or...
Ans :- This play has many way of interpretation. We can interpret this play with every given points. But, according to me Godot is God because when we read the dialogue between boy and vladimir that time vladimir asked to the boys that Godot is white? Then the boy said yes, so we can say that they talk about charist. In which we can say that Godot means Hitler because when vladimir asked to the boy.
Q:- 10 "The subject of the play is not Godot but 'waiting' (Esslin, A search for the self). Do you agree? How can you justify your answer?
Ans :- yes, I agree the subject of the play is not Godot but waiting, because in the beginning of the play both are waiting and at the end of the play both are waiting and at the end of the play both are waiting so waiting becomes the theme of the play.
Q :- 11 Do you think plays like this can better be 'read' than 'viewed' as it requires a lot of thinking on the part of readers, while viewing, the torrent of dialogues does not give ample time and space to 'think'? Or is it that the audio- visuals help in better understanding of the play?
Ans :- yes, I think the play like this can be batter understandable if it will be read first than viewed. Reading of the play helps to understand the things in the better why. For the understanding of the deeper philosophy one has to read the play. Only reading also makes you boring because you will not be able to imagine vladimir and Estragon and their useless action. We have to done both the things in the class which enriched our understanding of the play.
Q:- 12 Which of the following sequence you liked the most:
- Vladimir-Estragon killing time in questions and conversation a while waiting
- Pozzo-Lucky episode in both acts
- Conversation of Vladimir with the boy
Ans :- I like both the act first when vladimir and Estragon killing Their time at that time both arguing with each other and both tells deep philosophy of life in their conversations. In this I like the most is conversation of Vladimir with the boy. That Vladimir asked him whether they are happy or not. So, first conversation with the boy was the hope for Vladimir and second conversation somewhat despair and revealed Vladimir's selfishness.
Q :- 13 Did you feel the effect of existential crisis or meaninglessness of human existence in the irrational and indifference Universe during screening of the movie? Where and when exactly that feeling was felt, if ever it was?
Ans :- yes, we feel the effect of Existential crisis or meaningless of human existence in the irrational and indifference universe. In Existentialism person believe in real existence then and then they believe, they also does not believe in any proof. They believe in real experience. So when never see Godot, they never met Godot, they never talk with Godot, then still both are waiting so in Existentialism it becomes meaningless.
Q :- 14 Vladimir and Estragon talks about ‘hanging’ themselves and commit suicide, but they do not do so. How do you read this idea of suicide in Existentialism?
Ans :- In Existentialism suicide is best art ever done. After happens everything, there is a need of national thinking, that is suicide. It is a favorite solution when feeling of absurdity came in life. In this play Vladimir is a strong believer of Christianity and suicide is the sin in Christianity and we also can say that Estragon and Vladimir avoid suicide because they have hope for Godot.
Q :- 15 Can we do any political reading of the play if we see European nations represented by the 'names' of the characters (Vladimir - Russia; Estragon - France; Pozzo - Italy and Lucky - England)? What interpretation can be inferred from the play written just after World War II? Which country stands for 'Godot'?
So far as Pozzo and Lucky [master and slave] are concerned, we have to remember that Beckett was a disciple of Joyce and that Joyce hated England. Beckett meant Pozzo to be England, and Lucky to be Ireland." (Bert Lahr who played Estragon in Broadway production). Does this reading make any sense? Why? How? What?
Ans :- yes, we can interpret the political reading in which Vladimir stand for Russia, Pozzo stand of Italy, Lucky stand for England and Estragon stand for France, so, we can connect this to the world war in which these all countries destroyed by Godot means Germany that is why Vladimir asked to the boy that is Godot beating? Then boy replied yes. So we cannect Godot with ermany means title who destroyed many countries and killed thousands of people. So in this matter Ireland struggling a lot with England and recently we have seen British.
Q :- 16 The more the things change, the more it remains similar. There seems to have no change in Act I and Act II of the play. Even the conversation between Vladimir and the Boy sounds almost similar. But there is one major change. In Act I, in reply to Boy;s question, Vladimir says:
"BOY: What am I to tell Mr. Godot, Sir?
VLADIMIR:
Tell him . . . (he hesitates) . . . tell him you saw us. (Pause.) You did see us, didn't you?How does this conversation go in Act II? Is there any change in seeming similar situation and conversation? If so, what is it? What does it signify?
Ans :- In act I Vladimir said to boy That tell Godot that he Had seen both them and they are waiting for him. So, here vladimir takes about both vladimir and Estragon while in second act vladimir told the boy that tell Godot that you saw me, so here vladimir talked about his self he does not mention. He name of Estragon. So, in act 2 Vladimir seems selfish.
Thank you...
